A. This case was based on Khan Academy’s Discovery Lab held last summer. This video published in Dec. 2012 described the exploration of innovative hands-on instruction combined with technology integration.
B. This program showed a high level of student engagement as they worked through interesting and inspiring subjects such as robotics and stock market trading games. Technology that supported student learning was integrated with hands-on projects that excite student intuition and learning. An example was the stock market class, in which the instructor discussed the interdependence between countries as they became trading partners and reliant on one another for maintaining stability which reduces the threat of war. Students need to learn by doing and drawing connections while identifying patterns so they can reason and solve real world problems. Khan Academy incorporated projects that require resilience so students must continue working and trying to succeed. Student excitement is rarely measured but is observed throughout the lessons. High quality and highly interactive projects are being developed for teachers and packaged for immediate use in the classroom. Next summer, camps will go much deeper with writing, music, film making.
C. Khan Academy has been a very successful model used by teachers and students. It’s exciting to learn that they are creating summer camps and identifying highly successful lesson that can be packaged and taught. I have high expectations and quality of curriculum that may be coming our way in the future.
D. I was impressed with the geometry lesson and would like to use the lesson in my classroom if I teach math at the middle school level next year. Additionally, if I work in a classroom I will search for other curriculum created by Khan Academy.
E. I would rate this engaging video with a 5.
