Session 5 Reflection on Twitter in the Classroom
Before attending this master's program, I had no experience with Twitter. I wouldn't have viewed Twitter as an educational tool. Now, I'm amazed with the possibilities. I loved hearing the student in the video speak about his reluctance to share orally in a large class setting, but his level of confidence was high when sharing through Twitter. We need to provide access to all students. This is a tool that supports the needs of many students. I believe Amye or Dana brought up a valid point regarding students that need assistance with typing their thoughts. We need to offer many supports for the different personalities and learning needs of our students.
Twitter can also become a valuable tool for our students in research. Again, before this master's program I had no idea of the content and information available on Twitter. As educators we should be showing our students how to use this tool for research. Dan, thanks for showing us how to search on a topic. I didn't know this was an option. Twitter supports 21st century learning and the possibilities are limitless.
With technology, comes issues and concerns. There are issues regarding the management of inappropriate use. As teachers we need to become comfortable with the tool before introducing it to our students so we can be prepared for these issues. Maybe searching on this topic would be helpful. Also, at the elementary level teachers are trying to balance the instruction of multiple subjects. Time and resources at this level can be challenging however, wouldn't it be cool for an elementary student to teach his or her parent about the educational value of Twitter!
